Sasa River Camp Mount Elgon – Hiking Rest Stop on the Sasa Trail

Sasa River Camp

Sasa River Camp is located in Mount Elgon National Park and is a common resting point for hikers before continuing their journey to the summit of the ancient Mount Elgon volcano.

The camp lies along the Sasa Trail, one of the most popular routes to the summit. This trail is the shortest but also the steepest, requiring enough physical strength and preparation. It begins in the town of Budadiri, passing through farmlands where visitors can interact with local people before entering montane forests and steep cliffs.

Before starting this journey, tourists must register with the Uganda Wildlife Authority at Budadiri for safety and guidance.

Sasa River Camp sits at an altitude of about 2,900 meters. It is usually the first major stop for hikers on the trail. Since the trek to the summit takes several days, this camp provides a place to rest and prepare for the next stage.

The camp is set within the forest and offers views of the Sasa River. It provides space for camping and basic facilities for trekkers. Porters and guides usually accompany visitors, offering valuable support throughout the hike. The cool air at this altitude makes the camp a relaxing spot to recover before tackling the more challenging sections ahead.

Birdwatchers also find the camp rewarding, as the area is rich in birdlife. Species often seen include the African blue flycatcher, alpine chat, Jackson’s francolin, moorland francolin, and the Tacazze sunbird.

From Sasa River Camp, the trail continues higher through different ecosystems of the park. The next stop is Mude Cave Camp, located at about 3,500 meters.

The final climb to Wagagai Peak is the most difficult, taking hikers through the alpine zone. Those who manage the ascent are rewarded with wide views of the surrounding towns, the Karamoja plains, and the vast landscapes of Mount Elgon.

Sasa River Camp is not just a resting point but also a place to enjoy the forest, birdlife, and cool mountain air on the way to the summit of Mount Elgon.
