Planning to climb Mount Elgon in January? Mount Elgon in January experiences daytime temperatures between 25–28°C. Although it is a dry month, the weather on the mountain can still be unpredictable.
The trails are mostly dry, which makes trekking easier as they are not muddy or slippery. River crossings are also simpler since water levels are lower. However, the lower slopes of the mountain can be dusty during this month.
Wildlife is easier to spot as many animals gather around permanent water sources. Common sightings include duikers, antelopes, elephants, and buffaloes. Mount Elgon is also rich in birdlife, with over 300 species. Many of them can be seen in the montane forests and bamboo zones. Photography is rewarding in January, as the vegetation remains green and fresh from the November short rains. Views from Wagagai Peak are especially clear during this time.
Visitors can also explore the three Sipi Falls, located just outside the park, before starting their mountain trek. Several trails lead to the peaks: the Sasa Trail, which is steep and challenging; the Sipi Trail, starting at Sipi Falls; the Kapkwata route, often chosen by birdwatchers and plant lovers; and the less-used Suam Trail, which is remote.
Mount Elgon can be reached by road or air. By road, it takes about six hours from Kampala to Mbale town, then another 45 minutes to an hour by taxi to Budadiri. By air, flights run from Entebbe International Airport to Soroti airstrip, followed by a transfer of about one hour to the park. Accommodation options are available for all budgets, from luxury lodges like Sipi River Lodge, to mid-range hotels such as Kayegi Hotel, and budget facilities like Noah’s Ark Hotel.
Packing essentials for January include sunglasses, sunscreen, sturdy hiking boots, a water bottle, sleeping bag, headlamp, and warm clothing for cold evenings and nights. As January is part of the peak season, permits should be booked in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or Kenya Wildlife Service.
January is one of the best months to visit Mount Elgon, with dry trails, good wildlife sightings, and clear views.
