Waterfalls in Mount Elgon National Park - Visit Sipi Falls & More

There are quite a number of waterfalls in Mount Elgon National Park. Mount Elgon’s geography makes it easy for many waterfalls to form. The caldera collects a lot of rainfall, which creates these beautiful falls.

Sipi Falls

Sipi Falls are made up of three falls located just outside the park. They are the most famous and a must-see on a trip to Mount Elgon.

The upper falls, called Simbi Falls, are the tallest at 85 meters. From here you can see wide views of the Karamoja plains. The middle falls, known as Ngasire Falls, drop from 65 meters. The lower falls, which give Sipi Falls their name, are the largest at 95 meters and are closest to Sipi town.

Activities around Sipi Falls include hiking, photography, and cultural visits with the local community.

Chebonet Falls

Chebonet Falls are inside Mount Elgon National Park, near Chebonet town. They are more remote and receive fewer visitors than Sipi Falls. They give travelers a more wild and quiet experience away from the main trails.

Tutum Cave Falls

Tutum Cave Falls are on the Kenyan side of the park. The water flows from a cave that was once used as shelter by early people and is now home to many bats. This waterfall is popular with hikers climbing from Kenya to Koitoboss Peak.

Sisiyi Falls

Sisiyi Falls are in Buyaga Sub-county, Bulambuli District. They fall 100 meters from Sisiyi Cliff and flow all year round, even in the dry season. The falls are surrounded by coffee and banana plantations.

Bulago Falls

Bulago Falls are found on the slopes of Budadiri. They are remote, less visited, and perfect for travelers who want peace and quiet.

Kapkwai Cave Falls

Kapkwai Cave Falls are near the Kapkwai Exploration Centre. A visit here can be combined with bird watching and nature walks.

The best time to visit the waterfalls is during the rainy months of April to May and August to October. To explore them, it is best to hire guides who know the trails well and also help support the local community.
