Mount Elgon in December - Dry Season Hiking & Travel Guide

Planning to climb Mount Elgon in December? Mount Elgon in December falls within the dry season, making it a good month to visit the park with clear skies, good weather, and open views.

December marks the start of the short dry season, with little rainfall of about 75–90 mm. The skies are mostly clear, and the trails are less muddy and slippery, which makes hiking easier. The vegetation is thinner, allowing better visibility of Mount Elgon’s landscapes.

Wildlife viewing is rewarding this month, with high chances of seeing buffaloes, elephants, primates, and over 300 bird species. Both resident and migratory birds can be spotted in December, filling the forests with their calls.

Daytime temperatures average around 24.5°C and drop to about 13°C at night. At higher altitudes, temperatures can reach freezing levels. Hiking routes include the Sasa Trail, which is the shortest but steepest, taking about 4–5 days to complete. The Sipi Trail passes caves and waterfalls and usually takes up to 7 days. The Piswa Trail is the longest but gentler, also taking about 7 days through forested areas with good chances of wildlife sightings.

December is also a time for cultural encounters with the Bagisu and Sabiny people. Visitors can learn about their traditions, such as Arabica coffee growing, initiation ceremonies, and family life. The clear skies also provide good views of the caldera.

Although the park is less crowded in December, it is still important to book permits, guides, and accommodation in advance. Lodging options range from budget to mid-range and luxury. Preparing the body through light training is helpful, as altitude sickness may occur. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, and shortness of breath due to lower oxygen levels at higher elevations.

Pack essentials such as waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket, sleeping bag, insect repellent, first aid kit, flashlight, camera, and extra batteries.

December offers dry trails, open skies, and cultural experiences, making it a great month for hiking Mount Elgon.
