Mount Elgon in July - Dry Season Hiking, Wildlife & Birding

Planning to climb Mount Elgon in July? July is part of the dry season in Mount Elgon National Park, which runs from June to August.

Although the weather can still be unpredictable, the chances of heavy or prolonged rain are lower compared to the wetter months. July has less rainfall, clearer skies, and drier trails. However, sudden afternoon showers and mist at higher altitudes are still common.

Daytime temperatures range between 20°C and 25°C, while nights are cooler at about 10–15°C, especially in the lower areas. As you get closer to the summit, temperatures can drop below 10°C.

With dry trails, hiking in July is safer and more comfortable. Packing carefully is important. Essential items include sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, a hat, rain jacket, sunscreen, gloves, and socks. Other useful items are insect repellent, binoculars, a camera, a backpack, and a first aid kit.

July also offers a wide range of activities. Nature walks bring visitors close to wildlife such as elephants, duikers, bushbucks, blue monkeys, and black-and-white colobus monkeys.

Birdwatching is another highlight, with many species found in the park. These include Jackson’s francolin, black-collared apalis, black-shouldered kite, Tacazze sunbird, African blue flycatcher, chinspot batis, and cinnamon bee-eater.

Cave exploration is also popular, with Mount Elgon having several caves. The most famous is Kitum Cave, where elephants dig deep inside the rock to mine salt with their tusks.

Although Mount Elgon receives fewer crowds than other parks, it is still advisable to book accommodation, permits, and guides in advance.

July in Mount Elgon provides good weather, dry trails, and a mix of activities, making it a balanced month for all types of travelers.
