Sasa Trail Mount Elgon – Shortest Route to Wagagai Peak

Sasa Trail Mount Elgon - Shortest Route to Wagagai Peak

Sasa Trail is the shortest route to the highest peak of Mount Elgon, Wagagai Peak, but it is also the steepest. Hikers need to be physically fit to handle this challenge. The trail passes through community farms, forests, bamboo zones, and moorland, offering a rich hiking experience.

The Sasa Trail usually takes 3 days and 2 nights to reach the summit and return.

  • Day 1: Hike from Budadiri town to Mude Cave Camp.
  • Day 2: Climb from Mude Cave to Wagagai Peak.
  • Day 3: Descend from the summit back to Budadiri.

Those who want more time for exploration can extend the hike to 4 or 5 days for a full circuit.

Mude Cave is the first stop for camping on this trail. From here, hikers enjoy sunrise and sunset views. Jackson’s Peak, near the caldera rim, is another optional stop for those who want an extra climb. The final ascent leads through the caldera to Wagagai Peak, where wide views stretch into Kenya and the surrounding areas.

Before starting the hike, visitors must first obtain permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority office in Mbale. Hiring a guide is mandatory, as they know the trails well and ensure safe navigation. Porters are also available to help carry luggage.

Along the trail, hikers may spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys, buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, and several montane bird species. The caves along the way add a unique touch to the hike as you move through the volcanic caldera.

The best time to hike the Sasa Trail is during the dry months from June to August and December to March. During this time, the paths are easier to walk compared to the rainy season, when they become muddy and slippery.

Hikers are encouraged to carry strong boots, raincoats, sleeping bags, sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, trekking poles, warm clothing, a first aid kit, snacks, a reusable water bottle, and insect repellent. A camera with extra batteries is also useful for capturing memories.

The Sasa Trail is steep and challenging, but with fitness and determination, it offers one of the most rewarding ways to reach Wagagai Peak.
