Piswa Trail is one of the main routes in Mount Elgon National Park leading to Wagagai Peak. It is the longest trail, covering about 49 km for a round trip, but it is also considered the easiest way to reach the peak. For this reason, it is a popular choice for many hikers. The trail begins at Kapkwata on the northern side of Mount Elgon.
Along the Piswa Trail, hikers enjoy views of bamboo forests, heath and moorland, the Karamoja plains, and the hills of Kenya. In addition to the landscapes, wildlife can also be seen. These include colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and several bird species such as Jackson’s francolin, bearded vultures, and the Tacazze sunbird.
A full hike along the Piswa Trail, including the return trip, can take up to 7 days. While it is considered easier than other routes, hikers still need a reasonable level of fitness to complete the journey. Permits must be obtained from the Uganda Wildlife Authority before starting the hike.
The best time to hike the Piswa Trail is during the dry months of June to August and December to February. These months bring more sunshine, little rainfall, and shorter vegetation, which makes the trail easier to walk and the views clearer. Hiking during the rainy seasons of March to May and October to November is possible but more difficult, as the trail becomes muddy and slippery.
Packing well is important for safety and comfort. Essential items include sunglasses, a camera, sturdy hiking boots, a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, a hat, extra batteries, a backpack, a first aid kit, snacks, a walking stick, and a rain jacket.
For hikers looking for a longer but less steep route to Wagagai Peak, the Piswa Trail is a good option for a rewarding experience on Mount Elgon.
