Mount Elgon National Park Rules & Regulations - Visitor Guidelines

Mount Elgon National Park is a protected area for wildlife. It has strict rules and regulations to preserve the environment and ensure the safety of all visitors.

  • Pay Park Entry Fees: All visitors must pay entry fees to access the park. Fees vary depending on whether you are an East African citizen, a foreign resident, or a non-resident.
  • Acquire Permits on Time: Some activities, such as hiking to the summit, require permits that must be obtained in advance from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
  • Respect Wildlife: Maintain a safe distance from animals. They can be dangerous if disturbed.
  • Remain on Designated Paths: Stay on marked trails to avoid getting lost and to protect vegetation and animals.
  • Do Not Litter: Carry your waste out of the park or dispose of it in designated bins. Littering harms wildlife and water sources.
  • Always Hike with a Guide in Risky Areas: Do not visit places such as Koitoboss Peak or Kitum Cave without a guide. This prevents the risk of getting lost or facing dangerous animals.
  • Dress Properly: Wear appropriate clothing and gear for comfort and safety. Essential items include sturdy hiking shoes and warm clothes, especially in high-altitude areas.
  • Respect Local Communities: Seek permission before taking photos of local people or their property. The park is surrounded by the Bagisu and Sabiny tribes, and showing respect is important.
  • No Hunting or Poaching: Hunting and poaching are illegal in the park and can lead to fines or imprisonment.
  • Use of Drones Requires Permission: Drones are not allowed unless you have special permission from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
  • No Smoking: Smoking inside the park is prohibited to reduce the risk of wildfires.
  • Camp Only in Designated Areas: Camping is allowed only in areas approved by the Uganda Wildlife Authority to ensure visitor safety.

Mount Elgon National Park is an important conservation area. Following the rules helps protect wildlife and ensures that future generations can also enjoy the park.
