May is the peak of the rainy season in Mount Elgon National Park, and the park becomes very lively. The weather is cool, especially in higher altitudes. Daytime temperatures range between 9°C and 14°C, while night temperatures can drop to 3–5°C. Rainfall is heavy, averaging about 449 mm during the month.
Visiting Mount Elgon in May means exploring the park when it is covered with thick vegetation. The dense growth makes spotting animals more difficult, as many hide in the forest. However, some species can still be seen, including elephants around Kitum Cave, buffaloes, blue monkeys, and black-and-white colobus monkeys.
