Kapkwata Gate is found on the Kenyan side of Mount Elgon National Park, on the southern slopes near Chorlim village. It can be reached by road from Kitale town in about 45 minutes. A 4×4 safari vehicle is recommended, especially in the rainy season when the roads become slippery. Kitale town is also where tourists can buy supplies and find accommodation.
Through Kapkwata Gate, visitors can access the Koitoboss Peak via the caldera trails. The peak stands at 4,221 m, and hikers can also explore parts of the caldera. Caves that can be reached through this gate include Kitum Cave, famous for elephants that mine salt, as well as Ngwarisha, Chepnyalil, and Makingeny caves. The Sipi Falls area can also be accessed along the caldera trail.
Accommodation near the gate includes Chorlim Campsite for basic stays, mountain huts for camping, and other lodges inside the park. Hiking permits are processed through Kenya Wildlife Authority offices in Nairobi or Kitale, and guides and porters can be arranged at the gate. Armed rangers are required for cave visits because of wildlife such as elephants and buffaloes.
Activities around Kapkwata Gate include hiking to peaks and caves, birdwatching of over 300 bird species, and guided nature walks through montane forests. The summit offers wide views, though hikers should prepare for altitudes between 2,440 m and 4,000 m. Visitors coming from Uganda use Budadiri or Sipi gates, but crossovers to the Sasa trail on the Ugandan side can also be arranged.
The best time to visit is during the dry months of June to August and December to March, when trails are dry and easier to hike. The rainy seasons of April to May and October to November make the trails slippery. Packing should include warm clothes for the nights, sturdy hiking boots, a headlamp, snacks, a reusable water bottle, and a camera.
Kapkwata Gate is an important entry point on the Kenyan side of Mount Elgon, giving access to caves, peaks, wildlife, and hiking adventures.
