Rock Climbing at Sipi Falls & Mount Elgon – Routes, Costs & Best Time

Rock climbing around Mount Elgon is mostly done in the Sipi Falls area outside the park. It is a tough activity but very rewarding, offering great views of the park and its surroundings.

One of the main spots is Sipi Rock, which has more than 14 climbing routes. The hardest climb is about 35 meters high while the easiest is about 15 meters. From here, you can enjoy views of the Karamoja plains and the Sipi Falls. Another good spot is Chebonet Falls, which has a 40-meter high rock with both easy and challenging routes.

For those who want an even tougher challenge, there is Mudange Cliff, also called the “Wall of Death.” The climb here is not easy as the cliff is steep, slippery, and has metal stairs fixed into the rock.

The cost for rock climbing is about 65 USD for foreign non-residents, 60 USD for foreign residents, and 55,000 UGX for East African citizens. Equipment such as ropes, shoes, and helmets can be hired from the Sipi Falls Tourist Guides Association. They can also help you organize the whole rock climbing activity.

When preparing, pack warm clothes, light breathable clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable shoes. The weather can change quickly, so it is good to be ready. Safety is well managed since the activity is guided by trained personnel, and all equipment is regularly checked.

The best time to go rock climbing is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. During these months, the trails are dry, less slippery, and safer for climbing. Expect to try out several routes, about 14 in total, and make sure you are physically fit. Some basic training is given before the climbs, especially at Sipi, as it can be tough for first-time climbers both physically and mentally.

Rock climbing is a fun outdoor adventure that can even be enjoyed by children. A professional team is always available with the right skills, equipment, and first aid kits in case of an emergency.
