Mount Elgon in June - Best Time for Hiking, Wildlife & Culture

Planning to climb Mount Elgon in June? June is one of the best months to visit Mount Elgon National Park. The park is lively after the rains of April and May, and conditions are excellent for hiking and exploration.

June is generally dry, with little rainfall. The trails are clear and safe to walk, visibility is good, and the air is fresh across the park. Daytime temperatures on the lower slopes range between 20°C and 25°C, while night temperatures can drop to 5–10°C.

This month is ideal for hikers, as the trails are easier to navigate. The most rewarding experience is trekking to the summit of Mount Elgon, passing through different ecosystems along the way.

Wildlife viewing is also good in June. Visitors may see elephants, buffaloes, duikers, bushbucks, blue monkeys, and black-and-white colobus monkeys.

For birdwatchers, the park is rich in birdlife. Species found include Jackson’s francolin, moorland francolin, moustached green tinkerbird, moorland chat, white-starred robin, turacos, black-and-white casqued hornbill, African blue flycatcher, eastern bronze-naped pigeon, Tacazze sunbird, and golden-winged sunbird.

June is also a great month to visit Sipi Falls. The three cascades are at their strongest after the rains of April and May, making them especially impressive.

Cultural visits add to the experience. Travelers can meet the Bagisu and Sabiny communities to learn about their traditions and daily life. Another highlight is Kitum Cave, where elephants are often seen licking salt from the rock walls.

Mount Elgon in June offers excellent hiking, wildlife encounters, cultural visits, and natural attractions, making it one of the best months to explore the park.
