Mount Elgon Trekking Routes - Sipi, Sasa, Piswa & Suam Trails Guide

There are four designated Elgon trekking routes you can use to climb to the caldera. The Elgon trekking routes give visitors a chance to explore the park’s biodiversity, nearby communities, and landscapes as they head to the summit. Below are the main trekking routes used by visitors:

Sipi Trail

Sipi Trail is the most popular trekking route. It starts from Kapchorwa near the Sipi Falls. Along this trail, visitors can explore the waterfalls, Tutum Cave, and spot wildlife such as baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, and blue monkeys in the montane forests and bamboo zones. The Sipi Trail takes about 3 to 4 days to reach the summit. It is challenging but rewarding.

Sasa Trail

Sasa Trail is the quickest and most direct route to Wagagai Peak, the highest point of Mount Elgon. The trail begins at Bumasola in Budadiri town. The first day is tough as it involves steep and slippery climbs through community farms, dense forest, and the famous “Wall of Death.” The trail usually takes 4 days for a full trek to the summit and back.

Piswa Trail

Piswa Trail starts from Kapkwata in the northern part of the park. It is a long route with a gentle ascent, taking about 6 to 7 days. The trail is less crowded compared to others. Along the way, trekkers may see bird species, monkeys, and antelopes. The trail has camping spots, latrines, and water points. After reaching the peak, trekkers can either return using the same path or exit through another route.

Suam Trail

Suam Trail starts at Suam trading centre near Kitale on the Uganda-Kenya border, through the Chorlim Gate by the Suam River. It passes through dense forest, bamboo, and moorland. This trail takes about 4 to 5 days to complete. It is less developed and less visited, so it requires a guide. Facilities are limited, making it more challenging.

The best months to trek are December to February and June to August when the trails are dry and easier to hike.

Pack comfortable hiking boots, a water bottle, trekking poles, a first aid kit, and warm clothes. Physical fitness is important to complete the trek safely and enjoyably.

Mount Elgon offers different trekking routes, each with unique experiences for visitors.
