Sipi Trail is one of the most popular routes in Mount Elgon National Park, leading to the highest peak, Wagagai. The trail gives hikers a rewarding experience and requires good physical fitness.
The hike usually takes about 5 days.
- Day 1: The journey starts from Kapkwai to Tutum Cave. This walk takes about 3 to 4 hours and passes through dense forest.
- Day 2: Hikers move from Tutum Cave to Kajeri Cave, a walfvfvk of about 5 hours through bamboo forest zones.
- Day 3: The hike continues from Kajeri Cave to Mude Cave, which takes 6 to 7 hours. Along the way, hikers pass through heath and moorland and see places such as Kajeri Valley, Sipi River, and Muyembe.
- Day 4: Hikers climb from Mude Cave to Wagagai Peak, the highest point of Mount Elgon. From here, there are wide views of the surrounding land.
- Day 5: The return journey takes hikers to Sipi Falls, where they spend time learning from locals about the history and stories of the falls.
Sipi Falls has three waterfalls. The main falls drop 95 meters, Simba Falls drop 74 meters, and Ngasire Falls drop 85 meters.
The name “Sipi” comes from the local word sep, a plant that grows along riverbanks. It is used by the community to treat malaria and measles.
The Sipi Trail not only passes through natural landscapes but also winds through coffee plantations and local homesteads.
Hikers may also see wildlife such as black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, olive baboons, duikers, and bushbucks. Bird species include the black-collared apalis, Tacazze sunbird, and African blue flycatcher, among others.
Following the Sipi Trail allows tourists to enjoy both the natural world and local culture around Mount Elgon National Park.
