Mount Elgon in February - Dry Season Trekking & Travel Guide

Planning to climb Mount Elgon in February? February is a good month to visit Mount Elgon as it falls within the dry season from December to March. The skies are mostly clear, and the trails are dry and less slippery, making trekking easier. Light showers may occur on the Kenyan side of the park. Daytime temperatures on the lower slopes range between 23°C and 28°C, while higher altitudes are cooler during the day and cold at night.

The vegetation is fresh, which makes it a good month for photography, especially at sunrise and sunset. Views of the caldera and peaks are clear and wide. February is part of the peak season, but Mount Elgon remains less crowded compared to other parks. It is important to book trekking permits in advance from the Uganda Wildlife Authority or Kenya Wildlife Service, as well as to secure accommodation and guides early.

Wildlife is active during this month. Visitors have high chances of seeing buffaloes, elephants outside the caves, and monkeys. Bird activity is also good, with many species present. Sipi Falls, located outside the park, is another highlight to explore before starting the mountain trek.

Several trails lead to the summit. The Sasa Trail is the most direct but steep. The Piswa Trail is gentler but longer, passing through montane forests. Trekking usually takes 3–7 days depending on the route, with overnight stops at sites such as Mude Cave Camp and Kajeri Cave, which provide more comfort than camping.

Packing for February should include both light clothes for the day and warm layers for cold nights at higher altitudes. Essentials include a reusable water bottle of 3–5 liters for hydration, sturdy hiking boots, a sleeping bag, sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent.

The park can be accessed by road, taking about 5–6 hours from Kampala to Mbale town, then continuing to Budadiri. Alternatively, flights from Entebbe International Airport land at Soroti airstrip, from where transfers to lodges are arranged.

February is one of the best months to climb Mount Elgon, with dry trails, clear views, and comfortable weather for trekking.
