Climb Wagagai Peak - Highest Point on Mount Elgon (4,321m)

Wagagai Peak is the highest point on Mount Elgon, standing at 4,321 meters above sea level. From the top, visitors enjoy wide views of the surrounding land and nearby peaks.

Climbing Wagagai Peak is the most challenging hike on Mount Elgon, so good physical fitness is needed. On the way, hikers pass through high moorlands with open landscapes.

Reaching the peak takes several days. The most direct route is the Sasa Trail. On the first day, the hike begins at Budadiri. This section is very steep and tough, with rocky slopes called the “Wall of Life.” The trail climbs from the forest up to Mude Cave Camp.

On the second day, the journey continues into the high moorland where the air is cooler. This part is easier than the first day, and hikers are rewarded with views of the caldera and other peaks.

The final stage is less demanding. It is a simple walk along rocky paths that lead to the summit of Wagagai Peak.

Other trails can also be used. The Piswa Trail is longer but more gentle, so it takes extra days. It passes through forests and offers chances to see wildlife. This trail is good for hikers who prefer a slower climb. The Sipi Trail is another option. It starts from Sipi Falls and is also a long route to the top.

Mount Elgon is home to many animals, and hikers may see blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and different birds such as alpine chat, white-crested turaco, oriole finch, and brown-chested alethe.

The climb is best done in groups of four people, and it helps if everyone has a similar fitness level.

Overall, hiking Wagagai Peak is a rewarding adventure for those who want a special experience in Uganda.
