Mount Elgon National Park is located on the slopes of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda. The park covers parts of Mbale, Kapchorwa, and Sironko districts, while the rest of the mountain lies across the border in Kenya. Mbale town is the main gateway to the park, but it can also be accessed from other nearby districts.
The park ranges from about 2,000 meters to 4,321 meters above sea level, with Wagagai Peak as its highest point.
Mount Elgon National Park is easy to reach, and the journey to Eastern Uganda is straightforward. Most tourists travel by road, either in private vehicles or public transport. Private transport is more comfortable, especially when using a 4×4 safari vehicle. Visitors can hire a car or book through a trusted tour operator.
For budget travelers, public transport is the cheapest option. Buses such as Link Bus and Gateway operate daily from Kampala to Mbale. The journey from Kampala to Mount Elgon takes about 4 to 5 hours.
Air transport is also possible, though there is no airstrip inside the park. The nearest option is Soroti Airstrip. Visitors can fly from Entebbe to Soroti and then drive to Mbale, which is close to the park.
Accommodation around Mount Elgon is available in different ranges. Some of the popular options include Sipi River Lodge, Lacam Lodge, Noah’s Ark Lodge, Wimpey Hotel, and Wagagai Hotel.
It is important to plan your trip early for a smooth experience. Secure permits in advance, such as hiking and park entry permits, through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This is especially important during the peak season. The best time to visit is in the dry months of June to August and December to February when the trails are easier to hike.
