Kapkwai Gate is found on the eastern side of Mount Elgon National Park in Kapchorwa district. The gate is the main access point to the famous Sipi Falls. Visitors can reach Kapkwai Gate from Mbale town in about 2 hours by road, or from Kampala in about 6 hours via Jinja.
The Kapkwai area caters for visitors heading to the park and Sipi Falls. There are cottages that provide accommodation for all types of travelers, whether luxury, mid-range, or budget. Near the gate is an Exploration Centre that provides information about the trails, guides, and park rangers.
The centre also educates visitors about Mount Elgon’s biodiversity and conservation. It is often visited by students, researchers, and school groups. Short hikes, bird-watching, and nature walks are popular here.
Wildlife that can be seen near Kapkwai Gate includes Alpine Chat, Lemon Dove, Hartlaub’s Turaco, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and bamboo forests. Hikers to Sipi Falls begin from this gate and follow the Sipi Trail. This trail is less steep than the Sasa Trail, making it easier to manage.
It passes through montane forest, bamboo, and moorland. Hikers can spend a night at Tutum Cave, a large cave that provides shelter, before proceeding to the caldera rim and on to Wagagai Peak.
Kapkwai Gate can also be used to connect to the Piswa Trail from the Exploration Centre. At the gate, visitors pay their fees, register, and present their hiking permits. Guides, rangers, and porters can also be arranged here. The best time to visit Mount Elgon is during the dry seasons from June to August and December to March. For visitors who do not plan to reach the summit, 2 to 3 days are enough to explore the park.
Kapkwai Gate is an entry point to Sipi Falls, home to an education centre, and a base with accommodation options for visitors exploring Mount Elgon.
