Mbale District Uganda – Gateway to Mount Elgon & Sipi Falls

Mbale District is located in Eastern Uganda at the tail end of Wanale Ridge of Mount Elgon. It covers an area of about 2,435 hectares. It is bordered by Butaleja, Sironko to the north, Manafwa, Bududa, and Pallisa districts.

In the past, Mbale was much larger before it was divided. In 1966, Sebei district separated due to tribal conflicts between the Sabiny and the Bagisu. Later in 2000, more divisions created the districts of Bududa, Sironko, Namisindwa, and Manafwa. Mbale town remains the biggest town in the district and serves as the main commercial center.

The Bamasaba, also known as the Bagisu, call Mbale home. They see Mount Elgon as their sacred place, linked to their ancestral leader Masaba. Most people in the district are Bagisu, and they speak Lugisu. They practice cultural traditions such as the Imbalu circumcision ceremony, which marks the passage of boys into manhood. During this period, the Kadodi dance is performed by young boys and girls.

The district has fertile soils that support farming. The Bagisu grow Arabica coffee, matooke, beans, and sweet potatoes on the slopes of Mount Elgon. Coffee in particular is a major cash crop and an important source of income.

Mbale also has many educational institutions. These include the main campus of the Islamic University in Uganda, founded in 1988, and Uganda Christian University, Mbale campus, which started in 1993. Uganda Martyrs University with its main campus in Nkozi, and Livingstone International University, also provide higher education. There are many secondary and primary schools, health centres (levels III and IV), and two hospitals. Banking services are available with branches of Centenary Bank, Stanbic, and Bank of Baroda.

Mbale is a gateway to Mount Elgon National Park and even connects to Kitale in Kenya. Visitors can enjoy rock climbing, trekking to the summit of Mount Elgon, the fourth highest mountain in East Africa and a visit to the famous Sipi Falls before entering the park.

Mbale District is the cultural home of the Bagisu people and an important gateway to Mount Elgon and its attractions.
