Mount Elgon National Park is home to many animals and wildlife species that live across its slopes. The fertile soils of the ancient mountain support different vegetation zones, which provide habitats for these animals.
The montane forests are the most common and are known for hosting animals such as blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, duikers, and bushbucks. These animals make the forests lively and offer tourists rewarding encounters.
The bamboo forest zone is another key habitat, well known for herds of elephants. These large mammals are often seen at Kitum Cave, where they use their tusks to dig and lick natural salt deposits from the cave walls.
Other animals found in the park include buffaloes, oribis, leopards, civets, spotted hyenas, and Defassa waterbucks. Reptiles such as the Elgon forest gecko, Du Toit’s torrent frog, and Jackson’s chameleon also live here.
Mount Elgon is also a bird sanctuary with more than 300 bird species. Some of these include the African dusky flycatcher, variable sunbird, northern yellow white-eye, brimstone canary, red-winged starling, Eurasian blackcap, black-tailed oriole, crowned hornbill, double-toothed barbet, Nyanza swift, red-chested owlet, hadada ibis, speckled mousebird, red-fronted parrot, black cuckoo, western crested guineafowl, red-eyed dove, and Angola swallow, among others.
Tourists can see Mount Elgon’s wildlife mainly through guided nature walks since game drives are not available in the park. These walks usually take 2 to 3 hours and are led by armed rangers who guide visitors through different sections of the park. Bird-watching, rock climbing, and hiking are other activities where animals can be spotted.
The best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season, from June to August and December to February. During this period, rainfall is low, trails are dry, and movement around the park is easier.
Mount Elgon is a natural habitat where many animals, birds, and plants thrive, making it a special place to explore.
