Altitude sickness on Mount Elgon can occur at the summit of Wagagai, which stands at 4,321 m. At this height, oxygen levels are lower, and the body needs time to adjust.

The main cause of altitude sickness is rapid ascent. Some hikers try to complete the summit in just three days, yet the normal trek takes about five days. Sleeping at a higher altitude, such as spending two nights in a row at Mude Cave Camp, can also trigger altitude sickness.

Common signs of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, and trouble sleeping. These symptoms can worsen and become severe. If you notice any of these signs, inform your guide immediately and descend to a lower altitude.

To prevent altitude sickness on Mount Elgon, move at a slow pace, especially above 3,000 m. Stay hydrated by drinking at least 3 liters of water a day, as the body uses a lot of energy. Use gentler routes like the Piswa Trail or Sipi Trail.

Avoid alcohol and sleeping tablets while trekking, as they make the sickness worse. A useful tip is to ascend during the day but descend a little at night to sleep at a lower point. Medication can also help, but always consult your doctor before use.

Pay attention to your body. If you feel weak, short of breath, or unable to hold a conversation, it means you are moving too fast. Rest, use first aid, or descend depending on the seriousness of your symptoms. Check with your insurance provider before travel to confirm if it covers emergencies above 3,000 m. Training for long hikes before your trip can also help your body adjust.

Mount Elgon has a lower risk of altitude sickness compared to Mount Kilimanjaro. However, evacuation is harder because of the mountain’s remoteness. Always carry essentials like a first aid kit, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, snacks, comfortable hiking boots, socks, and a sleeping bag.

The best time to climb Mount Elgon is during the dry season from June to August and December to March, when the trails are less muddy and easier to hike.
